"It is very gratifying to know that you have read it more than once"A fine typed letter signed from Vita Sackville-West to a reader, Miss Richardson, thanking her for her "nice letter about my book on the Women's Land Army. It is very gratifying to know that you have read it more than once and I expect that you can now give your mother a great deal of information about the Land Army which perhaps she did not already know. I am sending you a photograph. I am afraid it is only the photograph of a painting but it is the only thing that I have got", together with the signed image she is referring to. It is a reproduction of William Strang's painting "Lady with a Red Hat", signed under the image.
The Women's Land Army, published in 1944, was written by Sackville-West to raise the profile of the contribution of the Women's Land Army to the war effort, and particularly to feeding the country. This comprehensive survey of the WLA and its members throughout the UK describes their history, duties and experiences such as farm work and tree felling.
Photograph: 9 x 6 inches. Typed letter signed: single page, on blue paper, headed "Sissinghurst Castle, Kent. 15 March 1945", together with the original brown paper envelope.
Letter with small rust mark from a paperclip, else in excellent condition. Photograph bright, clean, and remarkably well-preserved.
