Sindbad the Sailor & other Stories from the Arabian Nights.London: Hodder & Stoughton, Stock Code: 129557
First and signed limited edition, number 51 of 500 copies signed by the artist. "The exotic stories he illustrated struck a new chord in Dulac. They allowed him to enlarge his skill at caricature, and at the same time to sharpen his miniaturist's technique and to develop his lyrical sense of tone and composition. The sources he turned to were Japanese prints, which he had studied in his youth, with their flat colour and assymetry, and the high detail and colour of Indian and Persian miniatures" (ODNB). These influences are very clear in this sumptuous gift book; one of the other stories collected here being Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.
Quarto (280 x 216 mm). Contemporary blue half crushed morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt with red morocco onlaid centre pieces, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt.
Colour frontispiece and 22 tipped-in colour plates.
Small chip to fore-edge of limitation page otherwise contents clean and fresh, spine a little faded, boards have faded to buff, endpapers also faded and browned at edges, a very good copy.
