Sister Anne.
Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1932 Stock Code: 109193
The last of Beatrix Potter's books published in her lifetime
First edition, first issue. With the frontispiece incorrectly published opposite p. 7, rather than than title page. A Fairy Caravan offshoot, this is Potter's version of the tale of Bluebeard. It was withdrawn from The Fairy Caravan due to its length, and Potter now offered it to McKay as a story on its own. Due to her age and poor eyesight, Potter was unwilling to undertake the illustrating of Sister Anne, but was very pleased by the pen-and-ink artwork prepared by Sturges, commenting "Do thank Katharine Sturges from me for interpreting just what I meant!" It was never formally published in the UK, though some unbound sheets were submitted for copyright purposes. It was the last of Potter's books to be published in her lifetime.Description
Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt, top edge yellow. With dust jacket.
Illustrations
Frontispiece and 12 illustrations by Katherine Sturges.
Condition
Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine faded, some spotting to edges of text block, contents toned. A very good copy in the jacket with some loss to spine ends and panels.
