Sketches in Egypt, 1930 - an album of original watercolours.Egypt: 1930-32 Stock Code: 141303
Attractive and unusual water colours of Egypt. An extremely appealing collection of highly competent "officer quality" sketches. The subject matter is fairly typical - views on the Nile, in Cairo, the Ibrahim Agha mosque, in and around Damietta, Mansoura and Talkha, and a sequence of smaller "snap shots" of types, mat making, the forge, the vegetable shop - but the treatment and technique are really quite unusual.
The most successful of his images are quite loosely rendered with dashes of vivid colour to suggest the intensity of light; his studies of architecture quite effectively combine washes of colour with crisper detail to similar effect; his handling of cloud formations in the landscapes particularly well-observed and engaging. Victor William Chamberlain-Andrews (1897-1982), commissioned in 1917, he served as a lieutenant in the Hampshire and Leicestershire Regiments during World War I, fought at Cambrai. For a period in 1930 and 40s Chamberlain-Andrews was based in Egypt, records show his wife and son visiting him there in 1937, and his divorce there in 1949. At the time of his death he was living in Fleet, Hampshire, recorded as a retired schoolmaster. An attractive group.
