Sketches of Europe before the War.Longmans, Green & Co., Ltd, London , 1944 Stock Code: 105558
NotesFirst edition, highly uncommon with only three copies in libraries worldwide, this copy inscribed by the artist "to Mrs R. G. Casey, with kindest regards. Ramendra Nath Chakravorty, Sept. 8 1944" on the front free endpaper: the de facto dedication copy, the recipient Marie Casey being the author of the foreword and also the subject of Chakravorty's "heartfelt gratitude" in the preface; Casey has additionally signed her own name on the foreword leaf and has made two manuscript corrections to the printed text.
Chakravorty was born in Tripura in 1902 and trained at the Government School of Art in Calcutta. He later travelled to England, entered the Slade and notably studied wood engraving under Eric Gill; the present collection contains examples of his pencil sketches, ink-and-wash drawings, aquatints and oil paintings. Chakravorty died in 1955.
Square octavo. Original tan cloth, titles to front board in red. With the dust jacket.
27 tipped-in plates from illustrations by the artist.
Front board very gently bowed, a hint of faint tanning along inner hinges. An excellent copy in the slightly foxed dust jacket.
