[Sonnets.]Moscow: Tipografiya T-va I. N. Kushnerev I Ko, 1914 Stock Code: 135667
NotesFirst edition of this translation into Russian by Modest Tchaikovsky (1850-1916), the younger brother of the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and a respected dramatist, librettist, poet and translator in his own right, with his plays drawing a large attendance and with many prominent actors performing in them. Printed with the English original side by side, Tchaikovsky's translation preserves the iambic pentameter metre of the original, whereas the majority of previous Russian translations used a dactylic hexameter metre. Published soon after the outbreak of the First World War, proceeds from the book were donated to the suffering Belgians.
The edition is truly rare, with WorldCat listing just two copies worldwide, at Waseda University (Japan) and the Folger Library (USA).
Octavo. Original brown wrappers printed in black. Housed in a custom black card box, paper labels to spine and front panel.
Old Russian bookseller's ink stamp and blue crayon mark to rear cover. Very minor rubbing at extremities, very faint stain to front panel, occasional faint foxing to contents, yet overall an excellent copy.
With the exception of framed items*, Peter Harrington offers free delivery on all UK orders of rare books, maps and prints placed through this website. Delivery to USA and the rest of the world is similarly free for orders over £200.
