NotesFirst edition, presentation issue, presented by the author to his UK publisher Tom Maschler, inscribed on the half-title "To Tom with admiration and thanks for everything Bill Styron". Tom Maschler (b. 1933) was head of Jonathan Cape, which published Sophie's Choice in the UK the following year. Maschler was a highly influential figure in 20th-century literature: he had a particular genius for bringing world-class writers from abroad (such as Neruda, Garcia Marquez, and Derek Walcott) to publish in the UK, and 15 of his authors were awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He additionally has the honour of conceiving the Booker Prize, and of having introduced his friend Quentin Blake to Roald Dahl. His posthumous bookplate, designed by Quentin Blake, is affixed to the front pastedown. Sophie's Choice won the US National Book Award for Fiction in 1980, and was adapted into the film of the same name in 1982.
