Souvenirs du Gâzi Moustafa Kemâl Pacha.
Extrait de la Revue des Etudes Islamiques, Année 1927 - Cahiers I a III.Paris: Librairie orientaliste Paul Geuthner, 1927 Stock Code: 144804
First edition, an offprint from the Revue des Etudes Islamiques, decidedly scarce in commerce, and although well-represented institutionally, Library Hub cites only two copies in Britain (Cambridge and Eton). This is an early memoir of Atatürk, translated by Deny from the autobiographical anecdotes published in the government newspapers Milliyet and Hâkimiyet-i Milliye.
Jean Deny (1879-1963) was a French orientalist, professor of turkology at the Sorbonne and a teacher at the École nationale des langues orientales vivantes. His Souvenirs was published in the wake of the political trails of 1926, part of the process whereby Atatürk sought to suppress the Communist Party of Turkey.
Large square octavo (232 x 177 mm). Contemporary dark green half calf, tawny label, green cloth sides, marbled endpapers, sanguine speckled edges
2 portrait plates from photographs, large folding facsimile of a document in Atatürk's hand.
Contemporary ownership inscription of ?"J. M. Handforth" to preliminary blank. An excellent copy, nicely bound.
