First edition, second impression, signed by the author on the title page, his printed name struck through.

This title was written after Auden's visit to Spain during the Spanish Civil War, a troubling experience that left him morally ambivalent towards the Republican cause. He published this supportive poem on his return, however, to defend the Republicans against Nazism, which he viewed as the greater evil. The proceeds of the poem went towards medical care for antifascist forces.
