From the leading competitor to the Minerva Press
First edition of this Gothic novel, set on the Isle of Wight at the time of the English civil war, published by James Fletcher Hughes, the black sheep of the contemporary publishing world, whose output in the years 1806-7 outstripped even the Minerva Press, though he was bankrupt by 1811, having fallen out of step with a new taste for "proper" novels. The author was the prolific novelist Sir Thomas Isaac Horsley Curties (1780-1858), whose works usually exhibited anti-Catholic sentiment.Description
5 volumes, duodecimo (173 x 105 mm). Contemporary half calf, smooth spines with double gilt bands, red morocco labels, red daubed paper boards, speckled edges.
Condition
A few leaves slightly creased, some leaves slightly browned, an attractive copy from the library of Mary Hill, Marchioness of Downshire, Baroness Sandys (1774–1836), with her crested monogram on the spines.
