Stavrogin's Confession and The Plan of the Life of a Great Sinner.
With introductory and explanatory notes. Translated by S. S. Koteliansky and Virginia Woolf.London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1922 Stock Code: 145260
First edition in English, first impression, in the first issue binding.
The texts, being a formerly unpublished section of Dostoevsky's The Possessed and a sketch of a novel he never completed entitled The Life of a Great Sinner, were found in Russian archives in 1921 and published there in 1922. The translation is taken from this printing - Koteliansky translated the text from Russian to what Leonard Woolf called "very bad English" (Kirkpatrick), with Virginia Woolf then modifying the translation into good English. The book was published on 4 October 1922 in an edition of 1,050 copies. The Plan of the Life of a Great Sinner was also published in The Criterion that month.
Octavo. Original light blue quarter cloth (the primary binding), printed paper label to spine and front cover, blue patterned paper boards, fore and lower edges untrimmed.
6 pp. of publisher's advertisements at end.
Spine label tanned and light toning to extremities as often, the binding otherwise sound and square, internally crisp; a fresh, near-fine copy.
