A lavishly illustrated editionSigned limited edition, number 44 of 350 copies signed by the artist.
Stories from the Arabian Nights was the book that first announced Dulac's status as a popular artist, confirming him as "a direct challenger in the illustrated gift book market to the work of Arthur Rackham... The exotic stories he illustrated struck a new chord in Dulac. They allowed him to enlarge his skill at caricature, and at the same time to sharpen his miniaturist's technique and to develop his lyrical sense of tone and composition. The sources he turned to were Japanese prints, which he had studied in his youth, with their flat colour and asymmetry, and the high detail and colour of Indian and Persian miniatures" (ODNB).
Quarto (305 x 235 mm). Late 20th-century green crushed morocco, raised bands, red morocco spine label, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in four compartments in gilt, covers ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, marbled endpapers.
With 50 colour plates, including frontispiece, tipped-in on dark green paper, captioned tissue guards, title page printed in black and orange.
A near-fine copy, slight fading to spine, occasional spot of foxing, contents generally clean and free from marks, plates bright.
