First edition. Trained at Heatherley's, the Royal Academy Schools, the Munich Academy, and École des Beaux-Arts, at the outbreak of the War in 1914 Solomon was well-established as a society portraitist and painter of popular biblical, mythological, and other genre subjects. Signed up as a private in the Artist's Rifles, he began to promote his ideas about the importance and application of camouflage through the press, eventually attracting the attention of the War Office. Late in 1915, Plumer arranged for Solomon to visit the Western Front to study the techniques being employed by the French École de Camouflage, which was headed by the head scene painter from the Opéra de Paris. As a result he was sent to France to establish a camouflage section, Haig having arranged that he be given the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in order for him to be able to carry forward the section's work effectively. Later in the war he was recalled to London where he concentrated on perfecting the concealment of large areas of terrain, a subject which he addresses in the present work. A solid copy, with an interesting provenance, of an uncommon work.

Quarto. Original green-blue cloth, title gilt to the front board and spine.

Frontispiece and 30 other plates, 26 of them black and white, 2 of them folding, and 4 coloured. Additional "Author's Note" detailing the discoveries of a "recent weekend visit to Flanders" tipped in at at p.ix.

A little rubbed, spine mildly sunned, lower corners bumped, contemporary ink stamps of the corps library of the Bataljon-Wielrijders - Cyclists' Battalion - to the front free endpaper, title page, and first page of text, some browning throughout, but overall very good indeed.
