First US edition, first printing. This selection of papers from Hayek's later work, revised and dedicated to philosopher Karl Popper, was considered a departure from his earlier writings. Hayek "shifted his ground - partly under the influence of Popper - somewhat away from subjectivity towards the more persuasive one of the complexity of social phenomena" (ODNB). Nonetheless, the diverse selection of essays are still united under the relentless pursuit of personal and economic liberty which defined Hayek's lifework. The US and UK editions were published the same year.
