[Bound with:] BELLORI, Giovanni Pietro. Notae in Numismata tum Ephesia, tum aliarum urbium apibus insignita.Rome: Typis Mascardi; Typis Varesii, 1657 & 1658 Stock Code: 150425
First edition of Menestrier's profusely-illustrated treatise on the Ephesian Artemis statues, distinctively laden with fertility symbols, found at the Artemision in Turkey, here in attractive contemporary vellum bound together, as often, with the first edition of Bellori's treatise on the coinage and bee insignia of the goddess.
2 works bound in 1 volume, quarto (230 x 166 mm). Contemporary limp vellum gilt, manuscript title to spine, later paper shelf label, red speckled edges.
First work with 23 full-page copper plates, and 3 smaller engravings in text; second work with 2 full page plates, and 1 smaller engraving in text.
First work complete, the second work bound without the two terminal textual leaves "Apum ausipicia" at rear, as with numerous institutional copies. 20th-cenury monogram booklabel to front pastedown, contemporary inscription to title, 18th-century notations to rear endpapers. A few tiny wormholes but binding in very fresh condition, slight lifting and tear to front pastedown, light browning and foxing to contents, an excellent copy.
