Ten Poems.Belfast: Festival Publications, Stock Code: 116798
The author's first publication in the first issue, signedFirst edition, first issue, signed and dated by the author on the inner front cover. This is the author's first publication and, as well as being the most desirable, the first issue is by far the scarcest. Festival Publications printed this among a series of pamphlets by other emerging Irish poets like Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, and Philip Hobsbaum; this loosely defined group "is generally identified as the beginning of the Northern Irish poetry revival of the late 1960s through to the 1980s" (ODNB). The recipient of the postcard was Irish bibliophile Dr Philip Murray, whose collection was sold in 2016 in Ireland's largest-ever sale of first editions. Longley responds in the affirmative to Murray's request for book signings at their next meeting.
Octavo, single quire. Original white wrappers, wire-stitched, lettered in black, centrepiece illustration to front wrapper in purple. With a black and white postcard sent by Longley.
Tanning to wrapper, dampstain, light foxing, offsetting, and creasing to rear wrapper, a very good copy.
