Tolkien specifically chose Pauline Baynes (1922-2008) to illustrate this work after the success of her illustrations in Tolkien's Father Giles of Ham (1949). Baynes went on to illustrate a number of Tolkien's works, including illustrated poster version of the maps from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbits. She also produced the covers and interior illustrations for the first editions of C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, published from 1950 to 1956.
