Begun in 1758, The Annual Register was an annual survey of the past year (traditionally focusing on history, politics, and literature) from the British perspective. This volume, the most sought-after single volume of the series, covers the events of the American Revolutionary year, and prints in full (pp. 261-270) the American Declaration of Independence, one of its earliest publications in book form. Among the other articles are reviews for the two of the great 18th-century publications: the first volume of Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and the first edition of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations.
Octavo (194 x 124 mm). Contemporary calf, recent red morocco label to style, gilt series number to spine. Housed in a custom brown cloth box.
Joints and extremities expertly restored, contents with scattered foxing and browning but generally clean; a very good copy.
