Translated out of the Greek and Latin tongues. Being the version set forth A.D. 1611 compared with the most ancient authorities and revised A.D. 1894.London, New York, Toronto: Geoffrey Cumberlege, Oxford University Press, 1953 Stock Code: 131034
A fascinating copy of the biblical Apocrypha, presented by Ted Hughes to one of two Hungarian poets, either Janos Pilinsky (1921-1981) or Janos Csokits (1928-2011), inscribed "To Janos 10th August 1960, from Ted" on the front free endpaper. Hughes has marked up sections of interest in "The Wisdom of Solomon" for the recipient's interest. Pilinszky, a Catholic existentialist, achieved international acclaim (and censorship by the Communists) for his apocalyptic poem "Apokrif", which was first published in the collection Harmadnapon (Budapest, 1959). Pilinsky toured Europe and America from 1960 and it was Hughes who brought him to the attention of an English readership by publishing a translation of Pilinszky's Selected Poems in 1976 in tandem with János Csokits, who became acquainted with the author after meeting Olwyn Hughes, Ted's sister in Paris. Either Janos could be a reasonable candidate, but Csokitz the more likely since more closely associated with Hughes.
