Notes

First edition, first impression. James Louis Denbigh (1909-1965) was a professor anthropology at Brown University and pioneer in the application of dendrochronology (the study of tree rings) to Arctic archaeology. "Working with samples from living trees and driftwood from old Eskimo village sites on the Kobuk, he established a tree-ring chronology for the last 1,000 years of Eskimo culture". The research described in the present volume "opened entirely new vistas in Arctic archaeology" and "uncovered the roots of Eskimo culture". This monumental volume was his magnum opus, published only a few months before his untimely death. (Arctic Institute of North America obituary.)
