Early printing of John Vassos's illustrated Ballad of Reading Gaol, signed on the half title by the illustrator, and in excellent condition with the jacket and glassine. John Vassos (1898-1985) was an American industrial and graphic designer famous for designing the first commercially available television sets and many other popular products and logos. In 1926 Vassos's design for a cover illustration for a stage production of Salome cought the attention of publishers E. P. Dutton, resulting in a Vassos-illustrated edition of the play published in 1927, the first of nine illustrated books by the artist.
Octavo. Original black cloth-backed boards, titles gilt to spine, bluelaid paper to sides, gilt and black design to front, light grey endpapers, top edge dyed blue. With the dust jacket and the original glassine.
