The Ballad of Reading Gaol. By C.3.3.London: Leonard Smithers, 1898 Stock Code: 147514
A rare survival complete with dust jacketFirst and limited edition, one of 800 unnumbered copies printed on handmade paper. Another 30 copies were printed on japon. Both paper and japon copies were issued in this plain thin paper jacket, which is an understandably rare survival, being both fragile and unprinted, and so easily discarded.
The last paper copy at auction in jacket came up at Sotheby's in 1975; before that, there was a copy in the collection of H. Bertram Smith, Parke-Bernet, New York, 1941. To these two can be added only copy number 13 of 30 on japon, in jacket, sold at Sotheby's, 2004.
Octavo. Original white cloth-backed yellow cloth, spine lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, gatherings unopened after the first 6 leaves. With original unprinted dust jacket. Housed in a green morocco backed slipcase and chemise.
Jacket a little chipped and creased in places and missing portion at head of spine, the book fine.
