First edition. Gibbons, the son of influential Quakers, was a banker and the author of two books and a pseudonymous pamphlet on fiscal issues. This book has been described as "a clear and readable explanation of contemporary banking practise" (DAB), and it includes a series of humorous engravings. Gibbons was also a prominent abolitionist and he earned popular acclaim as author of the war song "We are coming, Father Abraham, three hundred thousand strong".
