Winner of the Young Reader's Choice Award for 1944, this was the first in the long-running series of Black Stallion books, "which have charmed young readers for nearly 50 years... and won Farley international acclaim. More than 12 million copies... have been sold, in 14 countries" (New York Times obituary, 18 October 1989, retrieved 11.03.19).

Jacket with chips, nicks and tears (with some loss), front panel with closed-tear (old tape repair on verso) and black ink stains; spine of binding slightly rolled and chipped at head; lengthy but neat gift inscription to half-title, a few marginal stains between pp. 116-23. A very good copy.
