A sharp set from the collection of Lord EsherFirst edition, publisher's presentation copy, with purple inkstamp "With the Publisher's Compliments" at the head of each title, and the discreet blindstamps of Rougham Hall, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk. A superb set from the library of the fastidious book collector Oliver Brett (1881-1963, 3rd Viscount Esher), his sale, Sotheby's, 11-12 March 1968, lot 302.
Edel & Laurence state that the first printing was of 500 copies, published 16 February 1886, with a second undifferentiated impression of 100 copies the following month.
3 volumes, octavo. Original dark blue-green fine-bead-grain cloth, double-rule border and curved-edge panel in black on front cover and in blind on rear cover, lettering and publisher's device in gilt and decorative rules at top and bottom in black on spines, brown-coated endpapers, all edges untrimmed. Housed in a dark blue cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery.
Oliver Brett bookplates. Tiny areas of wear to joints at centre (front joint of vol. 1, rear joints of vols. 2-3), miniscule nick to cloth at head of vol. 1, small patch of low cockling to rear board of same vol., small stickers at head of front free endpapers, hairline cracks to two front inner hinges, blank versos of free endpapers with a touch of foxing, these trifling flaws listed only for the ultra-fastidious, an excellent set, sharp, firm, and clean, near-fine overall.
