Volume I, third edition - more correctly impression, same year as the first - the rest first editions. Doyle had aspirations to write the official history of the campaign, and a was disappointed to be passed over; "The six-volume history was one of the author's most ambitious works and one which he felt he never received the credit it deserved: 'I would reckon it the greatest and most undeserved literary disappointment of my life if I did not know that the end is not come yet and that it may mirror those great times to those who are to come" (Green & Gibson). Falls considered the revised omnibus edition of 1928 "a remarkably useful work of its kind".

Overall a little rubbed, spines of volumes II and III somewhat sunned, cloth of lower joint of volume I superficially split and the front hinge cracking, pale toning throughout, remains a very good set.
