NotesFirst and only edition, of this record of the musical component of perhaps the most emotive and dramatic state funeral ever held in Britain. "The huge congregation - estimated at 10,000 - in the cathedral included two future Kings of England in addition to their five royal brothers. The scene in the stately sanctuary is described in the Times as 'too dear and sacred to Britons to be forgotten' while the Morning Post said 'nothing could be more sublimely awful, nor more solemnly affecting'" ("The Music at Nelson's Funeral in St. Paul's Cathedral", The Musical Times, XLVI, 752, p. 646). This copy is no beauty prize winner; however, the piece is decidedly uncommon, with just nine copies traced in an online search of institutional holdings - Universities of Cambridge, Leeds, Oxford, Reading, Penrhyn Castle, the Newberry, State Library of Victoria, Royal College of Music, and the British Library.
Folio. Ornate engraved title page and 40 pages of engraved musical notation.
Later nineteenth-century half roan, marbled card wraps.
Somewhat worn and soiled, lower corner of the front wrap missing, stripping and chipping from the spine, tan-burn to the corners of the first and last few leaves, title page and one other leaf slightly crudely reattached, content a little browned throughout, but remains about very good.,
