The Caliph's Design.
Architects! Where is your Vortex?London, The Egoist Ltd., 1919 Stock Code: 106471
NotesFirst edition, first impression, 1,000 copies were printed. With the rare publisher's flyer for Lewis's debut novel Tarr, "some were laid into copies of The Caliph's Design" (Morrow & Lafourcade). "In The Caliph's Design: Architects! Where is Your Vortex?, Lewis offers the most sustained and considered of his early critiques of the art scene of the early twentieth century. Published in 1919, it is a work of the immediate post-vorticist period and a product of Lewis's chastened sensibility following his service in the Great War" ( Toby Avard Foshay, Wyndham Lewis and the Avant-Garde: The Politics of the Intellect, 1992, p. 6).
Octavo. Original marbled blue and white paper over card boards, printed label on front cover.
Spine lightly sunned, a little wear to head and tail of spine, small stain and abrasion to label, light bump to bottom fore-corner, blue stain to endpapers (offsetting from the wraparound paper cover). Nevertheless a very good copy of a fragile publication.
