Notes

First edition. Published when Marriott had recently graduated in Law and entered the College of Advocates, and at the height of the Seven Years' War, this pamphlet contends that "... that the Dutch had forfeited claims to neutrality by trading with French colonies and by allowing Dutch territory to be used by France" (James Ford Bell Catalogue, M178). Marriott's arguments attracted a good deal of notice, and two further editions were called for within a year; a fourth edition was published in 1778. Marriott "was an indefatigable, insatiable, and indiscriminate suitor for patronage" (ODNB), rising eventually to become a Judge in Admiralty. Despite Roscoe's harsh judgement that he did "not leave a single judgement of historical value" (Studies in the History of the Admiralty and Prize Courts), his compilation of the forms and practice of the Admiralty Court, Formulare Instrumentarum published in 1802, was to be a major influence on American admiralty law.
