Notes

First edition, signed by the author on the title page, one of 200 copies issued in wrappers aside from a "Library edition" of 50 hardback copies. The Circle Game was Atwood's first regularly published book, following only a self-published poetry collection Double Persephone in 1961. It won her the first of her many awards, the Governor-General's Award. This copy has the contemporary ownership inscription on the half-title of Patrick Lane (b. 1939), an important Canadian poet of Atwood's Generation, who also won the G-G's award in 1978. A laid-in ticket for a more recent literary festival provides the provenance for the signature.
