The Collected Poetry.New York: Random House, 1951 Stock Code: 147282
First edition, eighth printing, familiarly inscribed by the author using his first name reserved for friends on the front free endpaper: "With best wishes from Wystan Auden. Feb. 1954". It was first published in 1945.
The recipient Dr William ("Woods") Shelton Gray, Jr (1926-1993), with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper, fostered friendships with major literary figures such as Auden and T. S. Eliot, and on one occasion met Ezra Pound. Auden dedicated the poem "The Aliens" to Gray, toured Europe with him, and in 1971 found him a position as a visiting lecturer in American Literature at the University of Graz in Austria.
Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt on black ground, top edge green.
A little rubbed, slight wear to tips, top edge dye running onto endpapers and edges, tiny split to inner hinge, visible at title page, occasional pencil underlining to text, remains bright. A very good copy.
