First edition thus, a re-issue of the original 1885 text, prepared for publication by Karl Pearson after Clifford's untimely death, here with an appreciative preface by Bertrand Russell and a biographical and critical introduction by James R. Newman. Printed in the US by Knopf, the work was distributed in the UK by Sigma Books, London, as part of their series "Introductions to Science", the present copy having the UK dust jacket.
"To explain modern scientific and mathematical thought to the uninitiated was Clifford's original purpose in writing this volume, which first appeared in 1885. He succeeded brilliantly; it has remained one of the classics of its kind. Yet it has appealed not only to laymen, but also to scientists and professional mathematicians interested in the thought of a great mind." (Publisher's blurb). Russell first read the book at the age of 15, noting in the preface to this edition the he "read it at once, with passionate interest and with an intoxicating delight in intellectual clarification. Form that day until I came to write this Preface, I had not looked at the book. Now, having re-read it after fifty-seven years, many of them devoted to the subjects of which it treats, I find that it deserved all the adolescent enthusiasm that I bestowed upon it when I first read it." (p. v).
