First edition thus, illustrated by Papé, one of 4,300 numbered sets, this is "unnumbered for Review". Frank Cheyne Papé (1878-1972) was an English artist and illustrator who had studied at The Slade School of Fine Art. He was married to Alice Stringer, also an illustrator and fellow Slade student.

2 volumes, large octavo (235 x 151 mm). Finely bound for the bookseller C. J. Sawyer in red half morocco gilt, titles and fleur-de-lys motifs in gilt to spines, red cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed.
Illustrations
24 engraved plates (including frontispieces) and numerous in-text illustrations by Frank C. Papé, title pages printed in red and black.
Condition
Spines a little sunned, boards a touch bowed, the bindings otherwise bright and firm, internally clean and fresh; a near-fine set.
