Notes

First edition, first impression of Bewley's study of classic and modern American literature, taking its title from Henry James's words, "It's a complex fate, being an American, and one of the responsibilities it entails is fighting against a superstitious valuation of Europe". This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper by the monolithic British literary critic F. R. Leavis (whose contribution to this book consists of a (mostly favourable) introduction to and commentary on the American Bewley's literary critique, but from the British perspective), "To John Speirs, with good wishes from QD & F.R.L., Nov. 1952, in advance for Christmas" (QD was Leavis's wife Queenie D. Leavis, neé Roth). Speirs contributed extensively to Scrutiny, the literary periodical that Leavis founded and edited until 1953, and was also the final person to visit the great critic before his death in April 1978.
