Fifth separate edition, first issue, preceding the second, large paper issue. The Conduct of the Understanding was first published in Locke's Posthumous Works of 1706, with the first separate edition published in 1741. Locke wrote The Conduct while writing revisions for his Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, intending it to constitute a new chapter that would be the largest chapter of the work. Locke never completed the revisions nor incorporated the new chapter into his Essay, but its separate publication a few decades after his death proved popular, and it underwent nine editions by the end of the 18th century.Description
