First edition of this American consolation anthology. The editor Griswold (1815-1857) "produced a flood of gift books containing the sentimental poetry popular at the time", and was considered by his contemporaries "an expert on American poetry" (ANB).
Small octavo. Original black cloth, binder's blindstamp to front free endpaper (Benjamin Bradley of Boston), spine lettered and decorated in gilt, front cover with gilt centrepiece and motto, rear centrepiece in blind, floral roll to borders in blind, yellow endpapers, edges gilt.
Faint ownership signature to title page. A couple of tiny spots of wear to covers, occasional foxing to contents, else clean. A very good copy.
