The Defence of the Scots Settlement at Darien, Answer'd, Paragraph by Paragraph.
By Philo-Britan.London: Printed, and Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1699 Stock Code: 135270
First edition of Walter Harris's rebuttal to A Defence of the Scots Settlement at Darien, published the same year and variously attributed to Archibald Foyer, George Ridpath, Andrew Fletcher and James Watson. That pamphlet had optimistically attempted, shortly before the Darien Scheme was abandoned, to convince the English to support the project, no doubt hoping to get their navy behind the scheme in the face of Spanish hostility. Harris's response goes through each paragraph (which is reprinted, essentially making this two works in one), rejecting the author's claims that England had obligation and interests in supporting the scheme.
Octavo (189 x 117 mm). Disbound pamphlet, residue of original spine, red speckled edges.
Without the half-title. Slightly rolled, last page a little soiled but otherwise clean internally. A very good copy.
