NotesNumber 184 of 250 large-paper sets of the first Wheatley edition, "the fullest edition of the diary before the Latham one 1970-83" (ODNB), here in a particularly handsome binding. The detailed private diary kept by Pepys from 1660 until 1669, first published in the early 19th century, is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London.
10 volumes, octavo (231 x 163 mm). Contemporary green morocco, spines lettered in gilt with gilt floral motifs to compartments, gilt portrait of Pepys to front covers with his anchor device to rear covers, gilt turn-ins, red endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed.
Engraved frontispiece to each volume and further illustrations throughout; title pages printed in red & black.
Heraldic bookplate of J. B. Body to front free endpaper versos. Spines very lightly sunned, a few instances of very minor rubbing, else a near-fine set.
