"This is the standard work of reference for Nelson's correspondence and is the principal source from which his biographers have drawn (and still do draw) their material" (Cowie). The first volume was originally published in 1844.

Original blue-green combed cloth, title gilt to spines with compartments in blind, panels in blind to the boards with arabesque cornerpieces enclosing a large central tool of an Admiralty coronet within a roundel containing Nelson's Trafalgar signal, in gilt to the front boards and in blind to the rear, pale yellow surface-paper endpapers.

Contemporary bookseller's ticket (Folthorp of Brighton) to front pastedown of 3 volumes; gift inscription dated 1854 to front free endpaper of first volume. Extremities lightly rubbed, spines faded but gilt still bright, two faint vertical creases to title of first volume, sporadic light foxing to contents. An excellent set.
