The first Shakespeare concordance
First edition thus. Ayscough's third volume, entitled An index to the remarkable passages and words made use of by Shakspeare, is the first published concordance of Shakespeare's plays. The publisher John Stockdale paid 200 guineas for the index which was specifically designed to accompany Stockdale's two-volume edition of Shakespeare's plays.Description
3 volumes, large octavo (242 x 163 mm). Late 19th-century green half morocco, green boards, elaborate tooling and titles to spines gilt, boards and spine ruled, blue marbled endpapers and edges.

Condition
Autograph letter between unidentified individuals placed in Vol. I. Late 19th-century gift inscription in ink to binders blank of Vol. I with earlier pencil inscription to title page. Spines and corners tanned, extremities rubbed and top fore-corner of Vol I a little more worn, a few small closed tears and cuts to margins, occasionl brown spots to leaves but for the most part clean from spotting, excepting a few early and late leaves. Very good condition.
