The Dramatic Works.London: Thomas Tegg, 1812-15 Stock Code: 134889
First edition with these illustrations, large paper issue (also published in duodecimo). A most appealing edition of Shakespeare issued by the enterprising Thomas Tegg, presented here in a delightful and sparkling period binding. The illustrations by John Thurston have been described as "most attractive" (Peter Cannon-Brookes, The Painted Word: British History Painting, 1750-1830, 1991).
12 volumes octavo (197 x 118 mm). Contemporary dark blue straight-grained morocco, low flat bands with dotted roll gilt, titles gilt direct to spines in second and fourth compartments, the others filled with foliate arabesques, boards with concentric panelling in gilt and blind, large oval arabesqued centre tool with central lyre device, corners milled gilt, all edges gilt, dusty rose pink flat endpapers, gilt floral roll to the turn-ins.
Precise engraved vignette titlepages by Richard Rhodes after John Thurston, lettering by E. Gullan or John Suffield.
Minor restoration, gilding retouched, at the head of one or two spines, a little light shelfwear, pale toning, offsetting from the vignettes, but overall very good.
