First edition, first impression, presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the half-title, "For dearest Lady Lewis and dearest Katie, Max 1928". Lady Lewis (1845-1931) was the second wife of the society lawyer Sir George Lewis. She created a salon of painters, writers, politicians, and lawyers. Her daughter Katie was a subject and great favourite of Burne-Jones and treated by him as a surrogate daughter of his own. Katie settled in the Cotswolds, where Max Beerbohm was part of her circle, along with Osbert Sitwell, Rex Whistler, Rupert Hart-Davis, Margot Asquith and the great unrequited love of her life, Bernard Berenson.
