The Earth Rose #1.
A Meat Poetry Tabloid.Santa Monica: privately printed by Steve Richmond, Stock Code: 145610
Inscribed by the editorThe first and only issue of The Earth Rose, a striking tabloid-style poetry broadside, inscribed by the editor in purple ink on the front page: "10,000 printed 12 people arrested + the war's over Steve Richmond".
The front page carries the inflammatory block-lettered headline "FUCK HATE". Richmond's inscription refers to the resulting police raid on his Santa Monica store - The Earth Rose - shortly after publication, in which he was arrested on obscenity charges and his stock seized, which included a number of Bukowski's books. On the second and third pages, under the tagline "a meat poetry tabloid", are poems by Bukowski ("freedom" and "True Story", which first appeared in Olé), Richmond ("white geese flying north" and "Vietnam (a flexible title)"), and John Buckner ("Surprise", "The Page", "Coughing", "To Be Outside", "Song of Against It").
Bifolium (leaf size 43.5 x 28.2 cm). Single sheet of white stock offset printed in black, folded once.
Black and white etching by Anna Hornisher to pp. 2-3, drawing on p. 4 by Richmond.
Faint horizontal fold smoothed out at centre, light wear, with a handful of small, closed tears along lower edge, otherwise without marks. Very good.
