The Eye of Jazz.
Graphic Design by Francis Paudras. Text assembled by Philippe Carles.
London: Viking, 1989 Stock Code: 143044
First edition in English, first impression, originally published in French four years previously. This is an excellent collection of the work of one of the greats of jazz photography. As Francis Paudras writes in his introduction, "Herman Leonard's work comes close to pure art: in the beauty of the image, for the emotion and feeling that it radiates".
Apprenticed to Karsh for a year, Leonard (1923-2010) went on to work as a freelance in New York shooting at Birdland and the Royal Roost, joined Norman Granz producing numerous record covers and worked for Marlon Brando as his personal photographer. His collection is now housed at the permanent archives of American Musical History in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
