Signed limited edition, number 271 of 750 copies signed by the artist. Rackham's first edition of the Fairy Tales, published in 1900, is here revised and enlarged with some new illustrations, as well as others redrawn and coloured.
Mrs Edgar Lucas, the translator, was born Alice Erichsen, the daughter of Hermann Erichsen, a Danish businessman who had settled first in Newcastle, then in Tooting, where Alice met her husband. She made successful translations from the Danish of Hans Christian Andersen and Henrik Pontoppidan. Her sister was the artist and illustrator Nelly Erichsen (1862-1918).
Quarto (305 x 235 mm). Late 20th-century dark blue crushed morocco, raised bands, red morocco spine label, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in four compartments in gilt, floral border to covers in gilt, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, marbled endpapers.
With 40 tipped-in colour plates, including frontispiece, tissue guards captioned in red, and black and white illustrations to the text, all by Rackham, title page printed in black and red.
A fine copy, contents clean and crisp, plates bright, in an attractive binding.
