Notes

First edition, first impression, of the author's third book. Ernest Rhys (1859-1946) gave up his job as an engineer in the coal industry to become a writer. He soon became a well-known figure on the London literary scene and founded the Rhymers' Club, which met in a room above Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street. J. M. Dent's Everyman collection was his idea. He intended it to be "a collection of the great literatures, beginning with the English, so co-ordinated that if its readers began with one creative book, they would want another and another till the great public had the world literature within its grasp".
