Published in the same year as the most famous of all Olympia publications, Nabokov's Lolita, Donleavy's debut novel was issued, to the author's horror, as a pornographic novel in the Traveller's Companion Series. Donleavy went to considerable effort to rescue the novel from association with other works in the series, well-documented in his autobiography The History of the Ginger Man.
