Notes

First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Lowry to M. M. Kimmel on the title page, "For Maggie, ( Speaking of Givers-), with love Lois Lowry 1995." Margaret Mary Kimmel is a professor emerita in the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. She has served on many important library councils including, the Carnegie 100 (an advisory group to the Carnegie Institute), the board of directors of the Children's Council of Western Pennsylvania, the advisory board of Beginning with Books, the board of trustees for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (member of the Executive Committee and Chair of Automation Committee), the United States National Section of the International Board of Books for Young People (as past president), the American Library Association Council (as member, chair of the Committee on Accreditation, chair of the Office of Library Personnel Advisory Committee, and chair of the Committee on Education), the Association of Library Service to Children (as past president, chair of the Committee on Accreditation, chair of the Office of Library Personnel Advisory Committee, and chair of the Committee on Education), and the board of directors of the Association for Library and Information Science Education. She has also sat on a number of Newbery committees. The Giver won the 1994 Newbery Medal. Due to the subject content of this title it was also listed on the American Library Association's list of most challenged books of the 1990-2000. Basis for the film starring Meryl Streep. A wonderful association copy of this rare Newbery title.
