NotesFirst edition, first impression. In 1945, W.H. Auden awarded Moore the Patron Prize for Contemporary Poetry and in 1947 he received the Harriet Monroe Memorial Prize from Poetry Magazine. The poet and editor Meary James Thurairajah Tambimuttu commissioned the young Lucian Freud to illustrate this book of poems and it is one of his first paid artistic undertakings. The stuffed zebra and palm tree that feature in this book also appeared in The Painter's Room on display at Freud's first solo exhibition in 1944 at the Lefevre Gallery.
