The Golden Cockerel Greek Anthology. A Selection of the Poems, Edited, with Translations into English Verse and an Introduction, by F. L. Lucas.London : 1937 Stock Code: 139717
NotesFirst edition, first printing, number 190 of 206 copies printed on hand-made paper. A beautiful edition, edited and translated by F. L. Lucas, one of the finest Greek scholars of his generation - described by Virginia Woolf as "pure Cambridge: clean as a breadknife and as sharp" - gathering selections from fifty poets in a small compass. The illustrations by Lettice Sandford, sinuous and sensual, resembling the decoration of Greek vases, were executed deftly on zinc, a soft medium for the engraver to work.

14 line-engravings on zinc by Lettice Sandford (12 full-page, title page vignette and tail-piece), letterpress printed in Greek and English, title page printed in terracotta and black.
Minor scuff marks to front cover otherwise in excellent condition.
